Bradley, Stephen participate in fierce debate

Jeb Bradley (R-Wolfeboro) said at a Republican debate that his primary rival has put New Hampshire on a path towards an income tax. While, former Health and Human Services Commissioner John Stephen (R-Manchester) said Bradley was distorting the record and he was simply following a state law supported by Bradley when Bradley served in the legislature.

Bradley said Stephen supported a state budget that increased spending in the Health and Human Services Department by $400 million and argued that Stephen shifted the cost of nursing homes onto local property taxes. "It's a road to a one-way-street you help put us on and that's a road to an income tax," Bradley said. "When John Lynch says the budget is unacceptable it should be unacceptable for you."

Stephen responded "there you go again Jeb" and said he was following a law that Bradley supported. "The law says I cannot cut spending until after the budget is passed. I basically had to submit a budget that maintained all programs at the rate of medical inflation," Stephen later told PolitickerNH.com.

The two rivals also used their closing statements to argue that each candidate was reinventing their records.

"Jeb you can try and reinvent your own record but I wish you wouldn't try and reinvent mine. I am a fiscal conservative," Stephen said in his closing statement.

Bradley countered that he was not reinventing Stephen's record.

"I'm not reinventing your record when I say you increased spending by 13 percent and you shifted the cost to taxpayers."

Bradley and Stephen also discussed recent Supreme Court rulings, social conservatives and the lack of a veterans hospital.

Despite the fierce primary fight, both Bradley and Stephen said the party must unite after the primary and defeat U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-Rochester).

Also at the debate were 2nd Congressional District Republican candidate state Sen. Bob Clegg (R-Hudson), former New Hampshire Republican Chairman Wayne Semprini, former state Sen. Chuck Morse (R-Salem) and Republican National Committeman Sean Mahoney and Committeewoman Phyllis Woods.

The debate was sponsored by the Seacoast Federation of Republican Women and the Stafford County Republican Women.

Jeb is right...

There is no doubt John Stephen increased spending and then put that cost on the back of taxpayers; the record is quite clear.

Jeb Bradley is the only fiscal conservative in this primary.

As long as Bradley or

As long as Bradley or Stephen takes it home I am fine with that but Stephen has a record with increased spending and supporting his office.

Great job at the debate Jeb,

Great job at the debate Jeb, way to attack Stephen on the Humans Health Services issues.

I can't wait to see the outcome of th enext debate.

John Stephen is not a fiscal

John Stephen is not a fiscal conservative, just look at his spending record.

Keep up the work Jeb.

13%

I was at the debate and that "13%" line was all Bradley had against Stephen over and over, it got to the point where you could hear a collective moan coming from the audience when he brought it up again, and the fact that Stephen has a credible defense doesn't make things better for Bradley.

In regards to audience reaction- Stephen Won

In regards to overall performance- Stephen Won

The only potentially credible argument Bradley has is Stephen's complete refusal to use earmarks, but fighting for earmarks isn't going to win Republican votes.

Stephen definitely took home

Stephen definitely took home the debate. Jeb mentioned unification after the primary so many times that he sounded, and looked, like he had already conceded.

The audience also took note of his refusal to answer why social conservatives should vote for him.

13% is rediculous! How can

13% is rediculous! How can Stephen get away with bloating a budget that bad! He doesn't even refute that number!

is John Stephen as our

is John Stephen as our nominee, the Democrats will have a field day! He raised our property taxes, he cut off funding for seniors at nursing homes, and is campaigning with Ray Burton (have we forgotten the people Burton used to employ on his campaigns!!)

07/10/08 12:10 am

Oh Please

The reason the budget was raised 13% is because of a law BRADLEY passed that practically made it a requirement! After the budget passed Stephen was THEN able to trim the fat and return $143,000,000 back to the taxpayers! John knows how to work within the bureaucracy to cut government, all Jeb knows is how to increase the government to choke off the taxpayer.

This issue is a red herring and you know that the Bradley campaign is simply clinging to it as their last hope, especially by their spamming of these message boards.

Rod puppet vs. Realist

Stephen is a rod puppet with various entrenched Republican has-been’s operating the rods. Craig Benson controlled the rods when he was Governor and Stephen was his “yes” man. At the debate, Stephen was given some “lines” to deliver which he did in such a way that it was obvious he had no idea what he was talking about. Stephen’s platform and utterances look like something crafted in whacko central. Bottom line, rod puppets never have original ideas and neither has Stephen – they just pop him up and he delivers his simple little responses to the mega-problems facing this nation today. Bradley demonstrated a clear and concise understanding of the issues and the ability to place solutions into a realistic and intelligent matrix.

I have a hard time believing

I have a hard time believing that anyone would even suggest that John Stephen is a spender. Does Jeb Bradley really think that Republican primary voters will forget how Stephen was vilified by Democrats and HHS bureacrats for harming "morale" at HHS with his economizing? Stephen aggressively sought to control the largest budget in state government, and he was the only prominent Republican who stood up to John Lynch during Lynch's five-year spending spree.

Jeb Bradley was part of the Republican tide that took over Congress and promptly turned its back on Republican principles. Bradley's congressional cohort spent and voted like Democrats, paving the way for the election of the likes of Carol Shea-Porter. The conservative Republican rank-and-file remain disgusted with these turncoats who, in a few short years, squandered the Reagan Revolution.

Jeb Bradley is a big-government Republican. John Stephen is a small-government conservative. I'm not sure anymore whether a true conservative can be elected to Congress from New Hampshire, but I am sure that Jeb Bradley is not entitled to claim that mantle.

this is the thanks we get

Jeb Bradley represents and has always worked for the interests of NH citizens. John Stephen works for the interests of the State of NH which is a BIG difference. I personally know the effects John Stephens' policies as Director of NH Health and Human Services had on draining my mother's life-long personal savings and assets after working a life-time paying personal and property taxes as a NH citizen.

It doesn't matter

Fight it out boys! Which ever of you comes out of this all bloodied has to face Carol. This isn't the state you remember where the Union Mis-Leader crowned the winner.

Jeb is dreaming if he thinks he is coming back. Raise all the money you want, throw in a few million of your own too. It was an army of grass roots supporters that got Carol to Washington in 06. I've looked and that army is still ready, only bigger this time, and with a few more dollars too. Carol will be there again to get us out of Iraq, get universal healthcare, and restore the constitution.

AND.... look out Verizon and ATT. That immunity is temporary. The folks who turned over the call records are going to jail where they belong.

07/10/08 8:02 pm

another dumb democrat

. . . who wants to spend everybody else's money on their own self interests. We are going to send Carol Porter home after one term.

Easy to Save Other Peoples' Money

It is easy to say you saved $143 M. Can Stephen show us the numbers?

Does saving other peoples' money make you a fiscal conservative. He told providers he had to cut their rates because the legislature did not give him enough money. He then told the legislature, and oh yes the press, that he had enough extra money to call himself a conservative.

Do the "conservatives" supporting him really know the facts?

07/11/08 11:38 am

Follow the facts

As far as commissioners go, John Stephen was one of the most effective.
As far as "cuts" go, you need to follow the facts. Log onto the Dept. of Administrative Services link: http://admin.state.nh.us/accounting/reports.asp, and click on the Annual Citizens Report. That's where you'll find that DHHS comprises 40% of the state budget with an annual increase of $1.7 billion a year (2.0%). This pattern emerges throughout the 5 years the report has been posted on the state website. The report shows you other facts about state spending and revenues.
So, John Stepehn never "cut" any budget he just reduced the outrageous increases.
And as far as the elderly, Stephen quest was to give family's and patient a choice as to whether they stay home or go to a state-run facility for care.
John Stephen fought hard in Concord for all taxpayers regardless of party. It was the people he cared about and that was made clear by his bipartisan approuch to solving DHHS issues in Concord.

07/11/08 12:10 pm

DHHS, $1.7 Billion dollar budget

2007: DHHS: $1.7 Billion budget, $33.3 million increase (2.0%) over previous year budget.
