MANCHESTER- Campaigning for his wife, Billy Shaheen told a crowd of Democrats that they must work "every day" until the November election.
Shaheen's appearance were the first public comments he has made since he resigned as co-chairman of U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton's New Hampshire campaign after he made controversial remarks about U.S. Sen. Barack Obama.
"Everyone wants to know where I've been, well it doesn't matter," Shaheen told the group of 100 Democrats.
Shaheen was speaking at the office opening for the New Hampshire Democratic Party. The office will hold the House and Senate caucus campaigns, the Manchester Democratic Party and U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter's office.
"I have one word for you today and that word is every day. Are you going to work every day from this day to that day until we win," Shaheen said. "When this is all set and done you gotta be able to say to yourself, I've done everything that could've been done. If you can't say that then you're cheating this country because this country needs you more than ever, more than serving in the military, more than doing anything else you can do for this country is right now, this time, every day you gotta get out there and work."
Also appearing at the office opening were state Sens. Lou D'Allesandro (D-Manchester), Sylvia Larsen (D-Concord), Betsi DeVries (D-Manchester), Executive Councilor John Shea (D-Nelson), Executive Council candidate Bob Bruce (D-Manchester) and state senate candidate Bob Backus (D-Manchester), House Speaker Terie Norelli (D-Portsmouth) and U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-Rochester).
"The Democrats hold the agenda for the American people and the American people know that," Shea-Porter said. "You have to work like your country depends on you because it does. Everything depends on the efforts you make now."
The year 2008 brought many fun memories for New Hampshire political junkies. From Hillary's tear in Portsmouth to the >

The fascist NHDP
No mention of how the NHDP decided that they would not allow cameras in to this event, even though it was supposedly public? Or how Carol Shea-Porter, blanching at the prospect of *gasp* talking to constituents on video, ducked out of a side door with her jacket over her face, and jumped in to a car - different than the one she came in?
Who is she, Paris Hilton?
Notice that there are no Obama signs
Why are there no Obama signs in the picture? Are there still problems with the Dems? Rumor has it the Shaheen people arent playing nice with the Obama people. Id hate to see a little thing like Bill Shaheen having to resign because he referenced something "That the Republicans would have brought up" that got him canned.
Same at the Amherst Parade
It was also noticed at the Amherst Parade that the Shaheen people didn't want anything to do with the small group of Obama people who ended up marching with the Hodes people.
I sense a rift.
Casting Pearls
Yabn: I marched with Hodes and Obama at Amherst. The true reason that our two groups marched together is that Jeanne Shaheen had 5 times as many supporters as Sen. Sununu. Our merry bands came together, enjoyed the day and beautiful Amherst. You should have seen all the smiles along the parade route, as we came by. Me in my "Desert Storm Vet" baseball cap. The old vets gave me the nod of respect. They know Paul and Barack will keep the sacred trust.
WWCBD: Good point, but you provide a cynical stab at "the why." I'm thinking Billy is rallying the local activists around their local candidates first. Some of the shady GOP groups, like the AJS, cloaking themselves under the tax code:
Public Citizen filed a complaint with the IRS in 2007 requesting that they revoke AJS's tax status because they were breaking election laws. And AJS had to pay a fine in 2006 for breaking Oklahoma's Telephone Consumer Protection Act in connection with a congressional race.
have targeted CSP and Shaheen. Granite State voters are wise to rally around their own. Billy knows that Obama has a surge going in NH, so it looks to me that he is taking care of the state he has always served, first and foremost. Just as it should be.
RandolphCarter777: Suffice to say, there are enough pictures to prove your whole schpeel is BS. Plus, how could CSP be hiding from constituents at a party event. That was no Town Hall, my friend. You need to polish up your "advocacy" skills because they are weak. Are all the talented GOP "consultants" avoiding NH since some were caught election tampering?
The three of you may want to consider that NH voters are smarter then you give them credit for. You will have to try harder. Unfortunately, truth just isn't on your side.
I know that won't stop you all, but please pick it up a notch. Karl Rove would be embarrassed.
Obama Signs
As the person who actually decorated the room, I can tell you that there is no rift--just that we did not have any Obama signs to place on the wall. One thing I can tell you, though, is that everyone in that room was wearing an Obama sticker!
Non-green Shaheen
Ah yes, Jeanne and her merry band of paid marchers (as one called himself) and the non-green fuel hog (teamster truck).
It was also funny to see that the Horn and Clegg campaign each outnumbered the Hodes people. Biggest parade in district 2 and his turnout was anemic (despite him being there).
No wonder why he spent over $200k on mailers.
Glad to see Bill is back. I bet he is proud of filing the education lawsuit during his wife's administration. Talk about one hand playing the other.
what?
"here are enough pictures to prove your whole schpeel is BS."
What does this mean?
I'm aware it wasn't a town hall, because Shea-Porter doesn't do those scary events where she runs the risk of getting an unscreened question.
How do you feel about the political director's policy of "no cameras"?
Carol Shea Porter, Jeanne Shaheen
Why do the democrats now oppose tracking what happened to Ray Buckley's policy on tracking? Buckley stated Tracking was an "accepted practice" and "The voters of New Hampshire expect their public officials to be open and available to the public." I guess unless you have take hundreds of thousand of dollars from unions and now support legislation that will strip workers of their right to a private ballot congrats Democrats a new double standard
Just me, or is this a frenzy?
DFM-Salem : Reality is that many Hodes’ supporters were among the large group with Shaheen. I realize it is scary for you to admit, but the Dems and many Independents are unified and passionately engaged behind the full slate. Try not to hurt yourself grasping that the Senate race will be vibrantly supported.
/Snark laden kudos to you though, sir. Though your post is bunkum, it is a step up. You hit all the talking points. B minus for style, F for content.
PS. Are you in favor of removing antique cars and trucks from parades because they aren’t “green.” Voters see how trivial you are being. I’ll give Steiner props for buzzing around on a Segway. That shows forward thinking. Not sure though, if that is a plus with some cliques of the GOP.
On the “tracking” matter: I don’t mind tracking. Hell, they are public servants. I do mind when hyper-partisan hacks lie about the context or distort what was said to feed to the parrots that repeat those lies over and over and over and over and over and over again. As for the camera “policy”, pardon me if I don’t take your word for it. There are pictures of this event on Blue Hampshire
Again, NH voters are super smart and the independents, that are the prize of this race, will see through the BS that you are puking forth to bridge the staggering disconnect that your base has from your brand. Bush has betrayed YOU. Though you are running away from him and his “politics”, you still cling to the putrid tactics of Rove.
I’m not afraid of November. The voters are smarter then you realize.
I honor your commitment, but simply can't respect the low level tactics of desperation that I see.
I have a video
that I will be posting shortly of the Democratic Party's political director telling me that there were no cameras allowed at the Manchester office opening. I guess he meant that my camera wasn't allowed.
Let's talk putrid tactics. People dressed like gas pumps busting in to Sununu events? I guess that's ok. Carol Shea-Porter heckling and harassing Jeb Bradley? Ok as well.
Someone asking Carol Shea-Porter a question? UNACCEPTABLE!
I'm beginning to see how this works.
Intentions matter.
If your purpose is to sting a politician, then why should they talk to you?
That goes for Reps and Dems. I don’t advocate attempts to set up a politician via a video hit job, which sole purpose is to embarrass and annoy.
I have seen great video of politicians, giving you insight into their political mind. However, imo, there is a difference between capturing a “macaca moment” and assaulting a pol with a camera in your hand.
So sir, are you a voter with a camera, trying to do some good citizen journalism? Or are you bent on hurting a candidate by making a scene in a rude manner, then framing the debacle as if you were the one wronged and the candidate the perp?
I can’t abide by that, no matter the party.
Don’t rush your edits for me, btw.
Jack, I would have to argue
Jack, I would have to argue that my content was at least worthy of a C (c'mon I know you believe in social promotion), as my insider affiliation is minimal. I just base my opinion on my own research and observations (don't worry i have been reading your posts on bluehampshire. com to get your opinion on NH isses also).
Nice try with the spin on Hodes. However the paid marchers for Shaheen could have "taken one for the team" and been spun off to his campaign. Heck he could have even reimbursed Shaheen seeing that he has plenty of cash on hand (after all his campaign has been subsidized with tax dollars). On the other hand maybe its his 35% approval rating (not to mention his votes on raising taxes in the 2011 budget) which turned people off( I will point out that his approval rating is better than the overall rating of congress).
Am I against antique vehicles? Heck no, in fact I think we should have more! I think we should have the NH National Guard (my old unit), and reserves, parade down the street with their vehicles (who doesn't love tanks, artillery, and other military hardware). My point about the fuel hog is that it is very ironic when you have a candidate (Shaheen) say in their stump speeches that NH residents should conserve more (though now is in favor of more domestic energy production) and there she is parading around on a 7 mpg flat bed truck followed by another van. Her thinking clearly follows the Al Gore mantra of "do as I say, not as i do" regarding energy policy (Even Charlie Rangel doesn't let his Cadillac idle while he is living in his 3 apartments).
I will agree with you (thanks for refreshing my memory) that the most innovative candidate was Jim Steiner (albeit no one has heard of him) as he promoted an alternative mode of transportation and highlighted a NH product.
Jack in closing I will confess that I gave money to the NHAC. Sorry to disappoint you and the others that I am not an out of state donor.
Hardly disappointed
Yo D, I am enjoying our chats. I had to look up "social promotion", so your helping me grow intellectually. I do believe in community, so I would describe my personal political philosophy as social 'devotion'. Since we both served, I am sure you have a sense of what I mean.
I didn't think I was spinning Hodes at Amherst. Many of Jeanne's supporters, if not all, are supporting Hodes. If Jeanne had staffers march, do you count those as paid marchers? You make them sound like Mitt Romney's crew running around to get him on the ballot. Besides, I saw mostly citizen activists with Jeanne which was in stark contrast to the lonely Sununu signs, bundled sadly in the back of an SUV.: http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn295/NHVETS/100_1508-1.jpg
Strange to hear you carp over the franked mail. The Republicans that allowed it didn't mind, so why do you? Constituents want to know about what has been accomplished by their Congressman. That is why franked mail exists. Or do you favor a lack of accountability to constituents. Seems like you do? And you want to keep Bush's tax breaks to his rich pals? Haven't the oil execs and Halliburton types made enough to line their pockets with our money already? (Oops, that's right, they borrowed it from the Chinese gov't. I guess our kids can work to pay the debt off) Man, those greedy bastards have you convinced enough to shill for them. Does capitalism evolve into corporatism in your fiscal faith system? There's free market and then there's "fixed" markets. Our economy is in the shitter, no thanks to Bush/Cheney's hand on the rudder. Or is it "in the till?"
I love old military gear too, but they have shows for that. Parading military hardware down the local streets reminds folks of the Soviets and Fascists to much. American's prefer that civilian leadership maintain a competent defense, but most rather not have it exploited to showcase military might. In the South, some folks still feel like they are being occupied by the North. This ol' grunt would love to see an M-1 and an Apache every Veterans Day. Those machines and the troops inside saved my ass big time. I don't think it odd that politicians enjoy the spirit of a good parade. The teamsters have been around for a long time. I am sure they are very proud of their history and that truck is surely nostalgic for them. They get to support a candidate that is looking out for working class folks and they get to show their pride with that truck. Win-win, in my book.
Relax, big guy. It was a parade.
Oh, well. Enough fun for one day. Best to you.
