Mayberry still considering running for NH GOP chairman
By Brian Lawson, PolitickerNH.com ReporterDover Republican activist Matt Mayberry said he is still thinking about running for New Hampshire Republican chairman, but added that his real estate business might stand in his way.
"I'm thinking about it, but I'm in an industry that requires all my attention," Mayberry said. "Real estate is not fun, so I don't know if I want to give up the time both personally and professionally to do this."
Mayberry is a realtor for Re/Max Reality Center.
Mayberry said that if he served as chairman, he would focus on strengthening the Republican grassroots activist base.
"I think I would bring a true grassroots activism," Mayberry said. "If you look at people 5 percent of Republicans consider themselves a grassroots activist and 5 percent of Democrats consider themselves a grassroots activist, but 90 percent of people just go about their lives and are not engaged in the day-to-day warfare of politics. My job would be to invite them into the party and be part of the debates we have within the party."
Mayberry said he would make up his mind sometime over the next 10 days.
Along with Mayberry, former Gov. John H. Sununu has said that he might also run for chairman and current Chairman Fergus Cullen has not publicly said whether or not he plans to run for a second term.
The New Hampshire Republicans will gather in January to elect the chairman. A date has not yet been selected.

Why would the GOP want Mayberry when he can't even get elected to public office? Last month, he finished a poor fourth in a 4-man race for state rep. A few years ago he finished a poor third in a GOP primary for state senate. Where were all the grassroots activists he's talking about? If he couldn't inspire them to get involved with his campaigns why would we expect him to be able to so for other candidates?

Not too long after losing the race for Executive Council, Ray Buckley was elected NH Dem chair.

The GOP can do better
Buckley was elected to several terms as a state rep and then ran a creditable campaign for executive council against an entrenched incumbent. Mayberry could only garner 19% in a 3-way GOP primary for state senate. That indicates an inability to organize and run an effective campaign. One of the candidates who beat him in that primary -- by a 3 to 1 margin -- was Dan Philbrick. Philbrick would make a better chairman. I have nothing against Mayberry, but the GOP can do so much better.
