Sununu pivots on energy

Funny thing: The same day John Sununu announces his support for the bipartisan New Energy Reform Act of 2008,  one of my favorite new blogs, FiveThirtyEight, posts that this is something Barack Obama should consider.

Go read the whole thing, but here's 538's summary of the bill's basics:

  • Opens additional drilling areas in the Gulf of Mexico, and allows Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia to elect to permit drilling off their coasts. Existing bans on drilling off the West Coast, including in the ANWR, would be preserved.
  • Dedicates $20 billion to R&D on alternative fuels for motor vehicles.
  • Extends a series of tax credits and incentives, such as for the purchase of hybrid vehicles.
  • Funds the above -- at total cost of about $84 billion -- by closing tax loopholes for petroleum companies, in conjunction with licensing fees.

By signing on today, Sununu accomplishes a couple of things:

  • He undercuts Jeanne Shaheen's argument that he is in the pocket of Big Oil.
  • He makes a move toward the center on an issue for which Shaheen is taking fire from conservative groups. Indeed, on this particular bill, Sununu is to the left of John McCain, who has opposed the bill because he is against closing the tax loopholes.

We've said before in this space that Sununu faces an uphill battle in this race. But beating Jeanne Shaheen to the center on energy -- there is no indication that she has a position on the bill, according to her website -- indicates that the Sununu folks have their heads in the game.

Sununu pivots on energy

Excellent observation. The trouble Shaheen and many Democrats (Shea-Porter, Hodes, Pelosi, etc.) have is that they risk angering their environmental base if they vote to open more area to drilling. They are in an untenable position, that's for sure, and it's coming at a very bad time for them, a few months before a big election. Gas prices being in the $4/gallon range has created a firestorm in the political realm and the Republicans are in an excellent position to reap rewards they would not have had. GW Bush pulling the executive order on the drill ban put the entire stinking issue right smack in the lap of Congress, an eight-hundred pound Gorilla if I ever saw one. Smart Republicans will embrace this one with both arms. Vote to drill everywhere. Keep the House and Senate open even after the Speaker retires. I would propose legislation that would forbid any Congressperson from being able purchase gasoline in the country if they oppose drilling. That would shake them up. Radical environmentalism only works when gas is at $1.50/gallon; as high as it now? Forgetaboutit.

Free Marketeers: Pillage and Plunder

The GOP and their fixed market insiders are supposed to get kudos for "fixing" the problem that THEY created? Come again?
Like pirates, they have swept into the marketplace, aided and abedded by absent regulators, and lined their pockets; leaving the working class to foot the bill.

The Enron Loophole was made by McCain's fat cat friends. This fixed the energy market, so they could plunder:

Shaheen has NO energy policy

It's not hard to beat Shaheen on energy policy when her key points include suing OPEC. Maybe she can hire John Edwards for that case.
