Survey says . . . well, exactly what does it say?
The polling debacle of 2008 (so far!) was the industry-wide projection of a win for Barack Obama in the New Hampshire Democratic presidential primary. The all-time champ remains the blown call in the 1948 presidential election, when the pollsters were certain Dewey would defeat Truman. Yet these high-profile goofs distract from a larger problem with the surveying of public opinion - a problem that journalists and pollsters alike need to confront. (Concord Monitor, Staff)

Vets call for full-service care in N.H.
NASHUA – For seven straight months, William David Martel Sr., took his brother to daily cancer treatments at a clinic here.
Martel is a U.S. armed services veteran, as was his brother, who subsequently died after a heart attack.
Like other veterans in New Hampshire, Martel welcomes the news that veterans needing a certain type of cancer treatment – radiation therapy – no longer have to drive to Massachusetts to get it under a new Veterans Administration program. (Nashua Telegraph, Patrick Meighan)

Domaingue abstains: Sets an example for board
Manchester School Board member Art Beaudry and former member Jonathan Cote could learn a thing or two from Alderman and former school board member Kelleigh Domaingue.
Beaudry has and Cote had personal conflicts of interest on certain measures before the board. Beaudry's wife is a school employee. He should never vote on salary or contract issues. But he has. (Union Leader, Staff)

City school district to remain independent

Retired NH Superior Court Justice Peter Smith dies
CONCORD—New Hampshire court officials say that retired Superior Court Justice Peter Smith of Bethlehem has died. He was 69.
Smith died at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center on Tuesday.
He served primarily in the Grafton and Coos County Superior Courts. (Boston Globe, AP)

Shaheen will discuss cost of college at Stratham event
STRATHAM — Former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, will speak at Great Bay Community College on Thursday, Aug. 7 at 10:30 a.m.

NHAC volunteer charged with assault
A volunteer collecting signatures for the New Hampshire Advantage Coalition has been charged with assaulting a disabled senior citizen on July 28th, The Concord Monitor is reporting.
Eric Green was gathering signatures in Concord when he began arguing with a 65-year old man over taxes. According to a police report Green pushed the man over the curb and the man fell to the ground. (PolitickerNH.com, Brian Lawson)

Sen. Cilley celebrates birthday with re-election kickoff party
ROCHESTER — Sen. Jackie Cilley, celebrating her birthday Tuesday with an official re-election campaign kickoff party, called on supporters to prove the widespread Democratic victories of 2006 were "not a fluke" but the "future for this state."
