With Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta deciding not to run for Governor it’s time to start the speculation game on who may run. Here is my short list of potential candidates. The problem the Republicans will face is most of these candidates are smart and know with John Lynch’s popularity it will be hard to defeat him. Although a good run can set up a future run.
Charlie Bass - The former Congressman would like to be Governor someday, but now may not be the time.
Tom Eaton - The former Senate President doesn’t have much to do these days and could garner Republican votes from an area of the state few other Republicans could.
Jack Heath - Meridian lost a candidate when Guinta decided not to run so why not create your own cadidate?
Joe Kenney - State Senator is already in the race.
John Lyons - Former state Senate candidate is close to Mike Dennehy and the was active in the McCain organization and is likely to run.
Sean Mahoney - Sean has long been rumored as a candidate for Governor.
Jim Merrill - Jim is an attractive candidate, but probably a few election cycles away from this race.
Steve Merrill - The former Governor would give Republicans the best chance to win, but would need to take a drastic pay cut.
Jayne Millerick - Jayne, like Lyons, is very close to the McCain people and would be a strong candidate who could use a close race as a launch to a future run.
Chuck Morse - The former state Senator is looking for a way back into politics. This could be it.
John Stephen - He’s in a tough primary campaign in the 1st CD right now and if he got in this race it could clear the field.
Fran Wendleboe - Always interested in a race like this she will probably take a look at it.
Now with the popularity of Lynch the list can be narrowed down to those who either think they can really win or are willing to take one for the team, run a good race and set up a future race. The most likely under that scenario would be John Lyons, Jayne Millerick and Fran Wendelboe with John Stephen a wildcard pick.
