Norelli elected House speaker, urges bi-partisanship

CONCORD--State Rep. Terie Norelli (D-Portsmouth) has been officially elected for a second term as House speaker and told House members that they would need to work across party lines to deal with the state budget.

Norelli defeated state Rep. Sherman Packard (R-Londonderry) and state Rep. Robert Rowe (R-Amherst). Norelli received 230 votes, Packard received 104 votes and Rowe got 53 votes. State Rep. Chris Roberts received 3 votes and one ballot was left blank.

Packard nominated for House speaker

In addition to being selected the House Republican leader state Rep. Sherman Packard (R-Londonderry) has also been nominated to be the Republican nominee for House Speaker.

Packard defeated state Rep. Robert Rowe (R-Amherst) by 86 votes to 65 votes. President George W. Bush and state Rep. Gene Chandler (R-Bartlett) both received one vote.

Norelli nominated for another term at speakership

New Hampshire House Democrats overwhelmingly nominated State Rep. Terie Norelli (D-Portsmouth) for a second term has House speaker.

Norelli's nomination was supported by 185 House Democratic members while state Rep. Kris Roberts (D-Keene) gained support from 18 Democrats for his speakership bid.

Norelli running for second term as Speaker

CONCORD--House Speaker Terie Norelli announced at a press conference that she has decided to run for a second term as Speaker.

"When the 161st session of the New Hampshire General Court convenes in December I will be ready to continue to lead members through the next two years," Norelli said at a press conference surrounded by members of the House Democratic Caucus. "I am here today to announce that I will be seeking a second term as speaker of the House."

Wendleboe to run for Speaker

State Rep. Fran Wendleboe (R-New Hampton) has decided to run for House speaker.

"A couple of weeks ago I booked the Upham Walker House to host a coffee and donuts for Republican House members and Republican house candidates before Wednesday's session," Wendleboe wrote in a e-mail to PolitickerNH.com. "I will be announcing my candidacy for Speaker at that time."

Packard 'ecstatic' about Hess endorsement

State Rep. Sherman Packard (R-Londonderry) says he is "ecstatic" that deputy House minority leader, David Hess (R-Hooksett) endorsed his run for House Speaker.

"Obviously I'm ecstatic about it," Packard told PolitickerNH.com. "David is well respected in the House by both Democrats and Republicans. He probably knows more about education funding than anyone."

Hess drops out of leadership contest, backs Packard

The acting state House minority leader for the better part of the year told colleagues yesterday that he will not seek the same position next year, forcing a situation that will be an all out scramble for this position and potentially for House Speaker.

State Rep. David Hess (R-Hooksett) has served as the de facto leader of his party ever since the last minority leader, Mike Whalley, died in March.

In an e-mail to Republican House members last night Hess made it clear he would not run for minority leader or Speaker if Republicans take back the majority.
