Nixon talked to Powell days before ’72 election

Recently released tape recordings of former President Richard Nixon show that Nixon talked with Wesley Powell days before the 1972 election.

Powell, a former Republican governor, was running for the United States Senate against incumbent U.S. Sen. Tom McIntyre (D-Laconia). Powell eventually lost to McIntyre 57 percent to 43 percent.

The conversation between Nixon and Powell was first reported by BlueHampshire.com.

Lynch says state not relying upon federal govt. for budget help

John Lynch

Gov. John Lynch (D-Hopkinton) spoke to reporters after attending a meeting with President-elect Obama and said that he is not depending on money from the federal government to help New Hampshire close its current budget deficit.

"I'm certainly not counting on money from the federal government to deal with our remaining $75 million shortfall, so I'm not counting on that," Lynch said on a conference call with reporters.

Lynch was attending a meeting of the National Governors Association which met with Obama in Philadelphia and said he does not think Obama will give states money that would make the current state budgets worse.

Commission releases public finance report

A commission established to study the possibility of publicly funding campaigns in New Hampshire has officially released its report.

The commission has been in place since August and was tasked with finding if it is possible for the state to fund a system that would finance state campaigns using taxpayer money.

The commission, officially called the Commission to Study the Feasibility of Public Funding of State Election Campaigns, recommended that candidates running for state senate, governor or executive council can receive matching funds from the state if the candidate reaches a threshold in the number of donations they receive from contributors. The commission also said the system would cost $6.5 million a year.

After the first day of recounts there has been no change in the winners of uncontested elections.

Yesterday, the Secretary of State preformed recounts for state representative races in Hillsborough Districts 2, 9 and 21. Races in Merrimack District 8 and Rockingham District 18 also saw no change in the winners.

State begins recount process

CONCORD--The New Hampshire secretary of state has begun recounts in 18 different elections.

Over the next week the state will perform recounts in 16 state representative races, the state senate district 3 race and also the race for Sullivan County commissioner. Between today and November 21st a recount will take place every day. Today is the busiest day for recounts with 6 recounts taking place at the same time.
