WITH CORRUPTION TRIAL LOOMING, SUNUNU FUNDS MAY GO TOWARD DEFENDING INDICTED SENATOR

Democrats call on Sununu to stop his campaign money from being spent to support Ted Stevens

According to a report in today’s edition of Roll Call, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, to which John Sununu donated $30,000 this cycle, now says it supports indicted-Senator Ted Stevens’ re-election bid, is polling voters in the state, and is refusing to say whether it will spend money on his behalf through advertising or other campaign spending.  After Stevens was indicted in July, Sununu returned $10,000 of the $47,000 Stevens has contributed to him, the GOP caucus removed Stevens from his committee leadership posts, and the NRSC refused to publicly endorse the incumbent in his primary.

Update: DSCC airs new ad against Sununu

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has begun airing a new ad against U.S. Sen. John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley) that claims the GOP incumbent is ignoring the middle-class.

The 30-second ad, titled "Doesn't See," takes aim at Sununu's voting record.

NRCC plays their hand early, same hand the DSCC is using against Sununu

The NRCC came out firing at Carol Shea-Porter after last nights primary win by former Congressman Jeb Bradley.  The NRCC appears to be making every effort to tie Shea-Porter to the Democratic Speaker of the House.  In their press release they concentrated on two quotes:

"'I just say thank you for noticing,' said Shea-Porter. ‘I vote with the speaker because she's right.'" (Union Leader, 8/9/07)

"And so far I have voted I think 100 percent of the time with (Democratic leaders) because frankly I think they're 100 percent right." (Concord Monitor, 4/15/07)

A look at the Jeanne Shaheen campaign and the DSCC efforts to attack John Sununu seem to be the same line of attack.  Shaheen is trying to link Sununu to an unpopular president.

Many a campaign have been run on the effort of tying to link candidates to the party leaders.  But not often does the link have the effect they wish to have as constituents tend to think their representative is different.  It will be interesting to watch how long they stick with these lines of attacks and if the overall theme of change will end up prevailing in the end.

New videos offer behind the scenes look at differing candidates in New Hampshire Senate race

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee's "Road to Victory" series, which documents life on the campaign trail, launched several videos giving viewers a behind the scenes look at the New Hampshire Senate race and the stark differences between Jeanne Shaheen’s campaign for change and John Sununu’s determination to stay the course. The videos include a glimpse into Shaheen’s home, a day campaigning with Shaheen, interviews with Granite Staters about Sununu’s loyalty to big business and a video with New Hampshire children discussing Sununu’s friendship with Bush.

Sununu: $7.9 million dollars of ads to attack me!

Following up on our last post regarding the role of national party campaign committees in the Shaheen-Sununu race:

In an e-mail today to supporters titled Its Time to Fight Back, Senator John Sununu writes:

Seeking to bolster Jeanne Shaheen's campaign, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, headed by New York's other very liberal Senator, Chuck Schumer, has pre-bought approximately $7.9 million dollars of television ads to begin in September. Yes, $7.9 million dollars of ads to attack me!

If this proves out, Team Sununu must be hoping that National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman John Ensign is twisting the arms of his colleagues to fill the NRSC coffers. Last month, Ensign promised to match dollar-for-dolllar any DSCC buy.

NRSC promises to match DSCC in the Granite State

The chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee has announced that the campaign arm of the U.S. Senate GOP will match dollar-for-dollar any money spent by the Democratic Senatorial Congressional Committee in New Hampshire.

"Chuck Schumer and the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) have recently placed television buys totaling approximately $44.8 million in targeted Senate races across the country. I will not allow our Republican candidates to be outspent by the DSCC this cycle," U.S. Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) said in a statement. "Therefore, it is my intention to give the NRSC's IE [Independent Expenditure] Unit the total budget to match the DSCC dollar for dollar in every state they run ads."

TWICE IN TWO DAYS SUNUNU VOTES FOR HIGHER TAXES

Blocks lower taxes for families, students, and teachers; opposes alternatives to Big Oil

Republican Senator John Sununu voted today against a bill that would prevent tax increases on millions of families, businesses, and entrepreneurs who are trying to develop alternatives to oil and gas after voting against a similar House version of the legislation yesterday.  The legislation included extensions of a broad range of tax provisions due to expire, incentives for new energy technologies that would help break America’s dependence on oil, disaster relief for communities struck by floods, fires, and storms, and the most significant health care reform bill in a decade.

N.H. Dems raise more than N.H GOP

Lost in all the candidate fillings we neglected to mention the FEC filings from the New Hampshire Republican Party (NHGOP) and the New Hampshire Democratic Party (NHDP).

During the month of June the NHDP raised almost nine times more money than the NHGOP. The state Democrats raised $259,959 and spent $228,155; while the NHGOP raised $30,480 and spent $17,906. A part of the NHDP total is transfers from the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committe  that total $177,707. The Republicans had a $15,000 transfer from the Republican National Committee.

SUNUNU JOINS FRINGE, VOTES AGAINST HOMEOWNER HELP

One of 13 to oppose addressing the growing mortgage crisis

On the same day that a new report showed that housing foreclosures doubled in the second quarter, Republican Senator John Sununu joined only thirteen Senators to vote against a bill to address the growing mortgage crisis and provide relief for struggling homeowners. The legislation Sununu voted against garnered wide bipartisan support, including backing from President Bush and New Hampshire Senator Judd Gregg, and ensures the ongoing ability of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to keep mortgage markets functioningThe bill also enables 400,000 homeowners to refinance into affordable mortgages and save their homes, helps communities hit hard by foreclosures to prevent empty houses from becoming drug and crime magnets, and gives a temporary tax credit to homeowners to offset property tax bills.
